Intimate waxing, also known as bikini waxing or Brazilian waxing, refers to a type of hair removal procedure that focuses on the removal of hair from the genital area and surrounding regions.

Intimate waxing is performed by a trained, licensed esthetician. The process involves applying heated wax to the desired area and then placing a paper strip over the wax. The strip is then quickly removed, pulling the hair out from the roots. This process is repeated until the desired hair removal is achieved.

There are different styles or levels of intimate waxing, ranging from a basic bikini line wax to more extensive styles like the Brazilian wax.

Bikini Wax:

  • A bikini wax focuses on removing hair from the bikini line, which is the area that extends from the edges of your underwear or swimsuit. It typically involves removing hair that is visible outside of the underwear or swimsuit. A basic bikini wax trims or removes hair from the sides and top of the bikini area to create a neat and clean appearance.

French Bikini Wax:

  • A French bikini wax is more extensive than a basic bikini wax. In addition to removing hair from the bikini line, it also involves removing hair from the labia (the inner and outer folds of the vulva). This style typically leaves a small strip or triangle of hair on the pubic mound, also known as the landing strip.

Brazilian wax:

  • A Brazilian wax is a type of intimate waxing that involves the complete removal of pubic hair from the genital area, including the front, back, and in-between areas. Unlike a bikini wax or a French bikini wax, which leave some hair in the pubic area, a Brazilian wax results in a completely smooth and hairless appearance.

Preparing for your wax:

  • Hair length: Make sure your hair is long enough for the wax to grip onto, ideally around 1/4 to 1/2 inch (6-12mm) in length. If your hair is too short, the wax won't be able to adhere properly, and if it's too long, it may cause more discomfort during the process.

  • Exfoliate: Gently exfoliate the area a day or two before your appointment. This helps remove dead skin cells, allowing the wax to adhere better and minimizing the chances of ingrown hairs.

  • Hygiene: Take a shower or bath on the day of your appointment to ensure cleanliness. Avoid applying any creams, lotions, or oils to the area being waxed, as they can interfere with the waxing process.

  • Pain relief: If you have a low pain threshold or are concerned about discomfort, you can take over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen about an hour before your appointment. This may help reduce any pain or inflammation.

  • Relaxation techniques: If you feel anxious or nervous, try practicing relaxation techniques like deep breathing exercises or listening to calming music. Relaxing your mind and body can help minimize discomfort during the process.

  • Wear comfortable clothing: Opt for loose, breathable clothing to wear to your appointment. Tight clothing can cause irritation and discomfort after waxing, especially in the sensitive waxed areas.

  • Communicate with the esthetician: When you arrive, communicate with the esthetician about your preferences and any concerns you may have. They are trained professionals and can guide you through the process, answer your questions, and ensure your comfort during the treatment.
